Logbook

A ships log, a legal document recording the progress of the ships voyage.  The Officer of the watch would write up entries in the log; the vessels position, weather, and other significant events during their watch.

As an artist I now see events played out as marks on the waterline on the hulls of boats.  My camera being my logbook to record these events – memories of my time on watch, my time on the high sea.

In creating these images, I am reminded of past events, the associated sounds and smells that were so distinct and part of life aboard the merchant ships.  The constant noise created by an array of machinery, motors, gears and the cavitation of the propeller propelling us through the sea.  A record, a log of a previous time created and now captured in camera.
